This film starred Carrie's from "Sex And The City" boyfriend, Jack Berger and Julia Roberts's best friend in "Mystic Pizza" as the parents in this slightly lower-than-average horror. Formulaic parts include, (as per usual), female exorcism, mad old lady's appearing to be creepy just because they're nothing special to look at and having a "chill in the air" when there's a ghost about.
The possessed doll in the film, and although it appears important enough to hold it's own sequel, yet it hardly appears in this film which is odd. This film borrows too heavily from "The Exorist"(1973), to be really, truely interesting. The exorcism, the priest, holy water, cold breath, levation, flying cruifixes and reciting Latin at the demon.
Apparentally, according to "folk law", there was a curse placed on the house by an old woman, as she didn't want anyone to buy her land after she died. She had worshipped the devil, (of course!), and sacrificed her son by killing him. So of course not a good house purchase! (Although why you don't want anyone to buy your land after you've gone and killed your son and yourself is beyond me, you obviously didn't want it!!!)
I wouldn't recommend this movie as it is rather lackstuster, with little or no, cinematography or atmosphere. Apparently Ryan Gosling wrote a song for it but I never noticed it!!! Not only was the film a generic, should have been, straight-to-dvd movie, it was set in the 1970's so everyone looked terrible, and the browney, yellowish hue did little to help the tone.
Basically a family of seven, (five daughters), spend all their saving on a unknown, auction property without first checking the cellar out. The youngest of the daughters "sees" something, and this mad woman jumps on her from a wardrobe, but her family see her fighting with herself. Apparently this spirit want them out of her house, and she will stop at nothing to do it. At exactly 03:07, she stops all the clocks in the house, (which is the very time I'm editing this now folks!), and reaps her vengance. She chucks scissors, puts bruises on the mother and destroys family pictures. Eventually she possesses the mother by puking in her mouth when she's ill, and the rest of the film, some very qualifiled, church goers, perform a exorcism to stop the mother killing her youngster child. Because all women are quite mad you know!
I do NOT rate this movie you'll be better of re-watching "The Exocrist" is you want to see female spirit possession. This film too heavily borrowed the best bits of it and still somehow ended up terribe, in my eyes. There are few scarey parts.
***Plot Spoiler Alert***
1)When we first see the demon mother, jumping off the wardrobe IS scary.
2)When the Lady performing the exorcism slide down a chute in the back of a wardrobe.
3)When the Lady performing the exorcism LOSES HER NECKLACE AND HER DAUGHTER HAS AN IDENTIAL ONE AT HOME.
Anyway I hope I remember to post again! Love always.X
